Regular residential trash collection occurs weekly, employing city-issued rolling carts. Residents are supplied with either a 65- or 95-gallon green trash cart and a 65-gallon blue recycling cart. A larger recycling cart or an additional one may be requested at no extra charge. Trash and recycling carts must be placed on the curb by 7:00 a.m. on collection day, and any missed collections due to tardiness or unacceptable items are not regarded as missed services by the city. The cost for this basic service is $20.21 per month, tax included. Low-income residents might qualify for reduced rates, and those with restricted mobility may be eligible for special assistance, which includes removal of waste from porches, portals, or garages.
For bulk collection, residents can request a fee-based, special pickup from the Environmental Service Division. This service covers a variety of large items like furniture, appliances (once emptied), barbeques (fuel and charcoal removed), brush, tree trunks, branches (bundled or bagged and cut to four-foot lengths or less), and more. The fee for this service is $50.00 for eight cubic yards or less, and $10.00 for each additional cubic yard beyond the first eight. Extra trash bag tags are also available for purchase if the trash exceeds the cart volume. These tags are sold in sheets of 5 for $15.00 per sheet.
Yard waste collection falls under either regular trash collection or bulk collection, depending on the size and nature of the yard waste. Small yard waste could be disposed of during regular trash collection while larger yard waste like tree trunks would necessitate a special pickup.
Disposal of trash at convenience centers is also an option where a solid waste punch card or a bag tag is required. Loads up to 5 cubic yards require one punch on the permit, with larger loads requiring more punches.
The city's endeavor to manage waste and recycling with efficiency extends to accommodating recycling overflow, ensuring residents can continue their recycling efforts even when faced with excess materials. Santa Fe's structured approach to waste collection reflects a balance between operational efficiency and accommodating resident needs.
